Soutache - also known as 'Russia braid' - was first developed in the 16th century as part of the French art of 'Passementerie'. It is a braided trim used to decorate clothing or soft furnishings and because it can be curved into numerous shapes, it is also ideal for jewellery-making. Soutache jewellery has two distinct advantages. It is extremely lightweight and easily conforms to the wearer's body. It is also amazingly beautiful and these days represents quite a dominant force in the world of jewellery-making. Each piece can be a totally unique design with fabulously created swirls of braid and flamboyant decoration, from beads, studs, pearls and pieces of glass to genuine gemstones. Even beginners in jewellery-making can manage to create something stunning that looks really professional and the good thing is, the whole process is entirely affordable.

Here at Barnett Lawson, we offer soutache braid in a variety of fantastic colours and two widths, so all you need to do is choose your matching beads, stones or other embellishments and get 'soutaching'!
